About Us

Biblical • Historic • Alive

Biblical

The supreme authority for our church, and really for all of human life, is the Bible. The Bible is God’s communication to us about himself, ourselves, and the world. Everything the Bible affirms as true really is true. Most importantly, this includes the record of creation, fall, God’s dealings with the uniquely selected Hebrew people (including their exodus from slavery in Egypt), the virgin birth of God’s unique Son, Jesus Christ, his death, and his miraculous resurrection from the dead!

Historic

Because Jesus rose from the dead, and then gave His promised Holy Spirit to believers, He has been directing, teaching, and inspiring His people for the last 2,000 years. Great wisdom, beautiful works of art, inspired music, and profound patterns of worship have accumulated under God’s providential guidance. We stand on the shoulders of countless generations of believers. That’s why the Nicene Creed affirms “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.” Catholic means historic and universal, comprising the elements of faith and morals that have been consensually held among Christians from the earliest centuries.

This historical consensus forms the Great Tradition in which we stand. The most catholic of all doctrines is the Holy Trinity: one God in three persons of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The catholic tradition includes the early universal creeds, historic patterns of liturgy, and a priesthood and bishops who can trace their lineage back to the Apostles. It affirms the dominical sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion, recognizing that in Holy Communion we partake of the real presence of the body and blood of Jesus. It also affirms the five ecclesial sacraments through which God’s grace is also supernaturally poured. We stand firmly in the historic catholic faith as received in the Anglican tradition.

Alive

Yes, we value history and tradition. But the tradition, and the great believers of the past, all tell us that God is alive and eager to make himself known. We believe in, and experience, the power and present ministry of the Holy Spirit in our worship. We structure our worship through the liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer, because we anticipate that God’s grace will flow through it.

Join us...to encounter worship that is Biblical, historic, and alive. Our worship begins on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in the beautiful, intimate Convent Chapel on the grounds of Santa Maria Church in Orinda.
